What we want our children to learn in PSHE at Ghyllgrove

PSHE at Ghyllgrove encourages and promotes personal growth and development in a safe and inclusive learning environment.  The curriculum is designed to be relevant in the fast-changing world in which the children are growing up. This topic is wide ranging with many cross-curricular links including computing and science. We intend for our students to develop skills as individuals to participate in the life of the school in a positive way based on fostering respectful relationships and endeavour to support the children’s aspirations as they consider their role in the wider world. Additionally, we aim to support the children’s mental health and wellbeing and to enable them to develop an awareness of emotions and their effects on mind and body and to develop resilience in the face of challenges that are present in life.

How we want our children to learn PSHE at Ghyllgrove

PSHE lessons are taught weekly and the content is divided into three core themes:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Relationships
  • Living in The Wider World

These themes are firmly rooted in our School Ethos, Ghyllgrove Learning Powers, Seven Daily Habits and British Values as well as our Behaviour and Relationships Policy. Lessons begin with finding out what the children already know and the main focus of the lessons often have a story or visual presentation as a stimulus and are discussion based. Children have opportunities to talk about how their knowledge and skills have developed. Teachers make adjustments to their lessons based on their knowledge of their students and are sensitive to their needs. Children with additional barriers to learning have access to pastoral support.
