Welcome Back

Welcome back and we hope you have had a wonderful and well rested break over the Summer Holidays.  We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead and cannot wait to start our Year 4 adventures.

This year we will continue to have a strong emphasis towards learning our times tables so the children can be more confident with their recall facts and develop a stronger understanding of the inverse operation, division, throughout the year.  Your child will be sent home with Weekly Spellings. It is important to read as much as possible and we ask that parents listen to their children read and help develop a love of books. When you listen to your children read, this should be recorded in their Home School Diary and each read will count towards a reading prize!

In English, we will be reading "The Iron Man”, an exciting adventure story by Ted Hughes. In Numeracy, we will be focusing on Place Value; developing our Arithmetic Skills; Multiplication and Division; and, developing our written methods of calculation. During the afternoons, our topic for the first half of the Autumn Term will be The Romans and the second half will be Mad Science.

Class 14 will be swimming this term every Thursday morning. Children will need a towel, swimming costume and hat in their swimming bags.  We walk to and from the Basildon Sporting Village, rain or shine, so ensure your child in prepared with the appropriate outdoor clothing.  Multi-Skills will be taking place on Thursday afternoon.

It is important that the children have their Ghyllgrove PE kits at school so that they can join in with the sessions.  Our PE kit is a white t-shirt with red shorts and trainers. Children with long hair must have their hair tied back and no jewellery can be worn during P.E.

Look out for more information on the curriculum that we will be studying over the course of the year in order to support your child as much as possible. Also, look out for any letters sent home or messages in the Home School Diary. We are using Times Table Rock Stars, a fantastic online resource, to develop our knowledge of multiplication and division facts. Times Table Rock Stars is a fun and challenging online programme designed to help pupils master their times tables by playing the different games and answering different questions to improve their Rock speed and status. Also, the children will earn coins for correctly answered questions which they can use to improve and upgrade their Rock Star Avatar. You can continue boosting your Rock score at home by practising your times tables on Times Tables Rock Stars. Just go to and use the login information inside your home school diary.

Finally, we would like to remind all families to label your child’s clothing and equipment.  This includes PE Kit, School Uniform, Coats and lunch boxes.  All items must have your child’s name and class number.  Lastly, may we remind you that we are a healthy school, we do ask the children have only water in the classrooms and at break time, the children can have a healthy snack of fruit or vegetable sticks. Alternatively, the children may prefer to buy a snack from the school hall.

Thank you and we are looking forward to working with you and your children in Year 4.
