Welcome to Class 5's page.

Our Learning

In English this term we are looking at a variety of books and we will be learning new sounds in phonics, this term our focus is phases 3 and 5. We will be exploring different types of text including non-fiction. We will be presenting our fact files that we have written to help us develop our speaking and listening skills. Throughout the term the children will be developing their spelling, punctuation and grammar skills to continue to develop their writing ability. As part of reading we will be developing the children's reading fluency and comprehension skills.

In maths this term we will be consolidating our learning about place value within 50. The children will continue to expand their knowledge of number represented in a variety of ways. The children will also be developing their arithmetic skills in addition and subtraction within 20. We will also be learning more about 2D and 3D shapes.

Wonderful World is our topic this half term, where we will investigate the world that we live in. We will be learning about the different animal classes, what they eat and hot and cold countries.  This is followed by 'Toy Museum'. We will be exploring the history of toys, their materials and properties as well as designing and creating our own toy.

PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please make sure children have their PE kit in school at all times. Earrings must be removed otherwise children will not be able to participate in the lesson.

In class expectations

In Class 5 we have very high expectations of exceptional behaviour and attitudes to learning. All children are expected to stay on green by following the school rules, listening carefully and trying their best. However, they should be striving for gold by showing the Ghyllgrove Learning Powers. You should aim to be getting your green certificates to take home every Friday to show your parents how fabulous you have been at school.

At Home…

In order to help your child achieve and accelerate their progress, we ask for the following commitments from you at home too:

  • Listen to your child read at home at least 3 times a week using our amazing online Bug Club resource or the colour banded books which are sent home weekly. Records of this must be made in your child’s Home School Diary. Please take the time to put a small note in it and we will also do the same anytime we hear your child read during the school day.

  • Practise counting, reading and writing your numbers to 20.

  • Practise the tricky word Planet sticker at the front of your home school diary.

School day timings

School begins at 8:50am and children must line up with their teacher in their zone on the playground.

School finishes at 3.00pm and the children are to be collected from the KS1 playground.

Any appointments needed with the class teacher will have to be made via the school office.
