Class 8

Welcome to Class 8

Class Teacher: Mrs Killeen and Mrs Hart

Learning Assistant: Ms Crampton

Hello and welcome to Class 8,

I am very excited and looking forward to another fun, hardworking and successful term in Class 8. Our class page will include lots of important notices and information about our upcoming learning so please remember to check back regularly for any updates. Keep your eyes peeled for any photos of your learning on our class page and on Twitter too!

During the Summer term in English, we will be reading a wide range of exciting and interesting stories, which we will use to help us with our writing. We will be learning new fictional stories and continuing to plan and write our own stories and non-fiction texts. Throughout the term, we will be developing our spelling, punctuation and grammar skills to further develop our writing. As part of guided reading and across the curriculum, we will explore a variety of poetry, stories, non-fiction texts and recounts where we will develop our reading fluency and comprehension. Remember to read regularly at home so you can move along our reading game!

In Maths, we will be recapping and embedding our previous learning ahead of our KS1 SATs and will use this to help us solve different reasoning and problem-solving questions. We will continue to solidify our mental and written addition and subtraction skills, especially when solving calculations with two 2-digit numbers. As well as this, we will continue to use our multiplication and division learning and 2, 5 and 10 times tables to help us find fractions of shapes, amounts and measurements. Throughout the term, we will be using our learning different contexts to solve a range of problems, including missing number problems and 2 step problems. Towards the end of the term, we will focus on telling the time so if you have a suitable watch, it would be great to see you using it.

This term, our topics will be ‘‘Animal Carnival’’ and “Down on the Farm”. In these topics, we will be exploring the characteristics of things that are dead, alive and have never been alive. We will then focus on different habitats found within the countryside and explore the different plants and animals that live there. Later in the term, we will learn about the basic needs of plants and animals, including humans, for them to survive. As well as looking at the animals and plants that live there, we will identify the different human and physical features of the countryside and a village. Within our Topic and Design and Technology lessons, we will find out where our food has come from and how we can have a healthy diet and lifestyle. There will also be lots of opportunities to produce some beautiful fruit inspired artwork too.

Our PE lessons will take place on Monday and Tuesday. PE kits (white t-shirt, red shorts and trainers) are to be kept in school and will be sent home half-termly to be washed. Please can you include a cold weather P.E. Kit (plain joggers and sweatshirt) as a number of PE lessons will take place outside. We would also like to remind you that earrings should not be worn on these days.

With so many exciting things going on in school, there will be lots to talk about on those journeys home. Make sure you’re impressing your parents and telling them all about your learning. Don’t forget to check out our Twitter page too – there are lots of photos of our wonderful learning!

Behaviour and attitude to learning – the key to success!

In Class 8, we have very high expectations of exceptional behaviour and attitudes to learning. All children are expected to stay on green by following the school rules, listening carefully and trying their best. However, they should be striving for gold by showing the Ghyllgrove Learning Powers. You should aim to be getting your green certificates to take home every Friday to show your parents how fabulous you have been at school.

At Home…

All of the staff in Class 8 will work tireless to ensure everybody does their best this year. We will regularly hear the children read and set them number challenges too, so look out for updates in the home school diaries.

In order to help your child achieve and accelerate their progress, we ask for the following commitments from you at home too:

  • Listen to your child read at home 3 times a week. Records of this can be made in your child’s Home School Diary. Please take the time to put a small note and we will also do the same anytime we hear your child read during the school day.
  • Practise your number bonds to 10 / 20 and your 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
  • Complete the weekly homework task on Google Classroom. This will be set on Friday and must be submitted by Tuesday.

We are incredibly lucky to have access to some fantastic online resources, which will also support their learning too. Your child’s login details are included at the front of their Home School Diary.

Bug Club (Reading):

Purple Mash (All areas of the curriculum):

Please remember, if you have ANY concerns during the year then come and see us. We will always help you if we know about anything that is worrying you. We want to keep everybody at Ghyllgrove safe, happy and learning.
