Welcome to Class 8
Class Teachers: Mrs Morrad & Mrs Killeen
Learning Support Assistants: Mrs Jackson, Miss Moth & Miss Yeo
Midday Assistant: Miss Kneller
After a very strange end to Year 1, we hope you, like ourselves, are very excited to return and are looking forward to a safe, fun, hardworking, creative and successful Year 2.
Our class page will include important notices and information about our upcoming topics so please remember to check back regularly for any updates.
During the Autumn term in English, we will be reading a wide range of exciting and interesting stories, which we will use to help us with our writing. We will be learning how important it is to remember our basic writing skills, quality vocabulary and best handwriting. Also, we will be practising a range of reading skills during our guided reading sessions and across the curriculum we will continue to work on our spelling, phonics, punctuation and grammar too. Remember to read regularly at home.
"The more you that you read the more things you know.
The more that you learn, the more places you will go."
In Maths, we will be developing our core number skills which are vital in order to develop further understanding in all areas of Maths. We will be exploring numbers, learning about place value and tackling a range of problem solving and reasoning activities. We will then move on to developing our mental and written methods of calculation and understanding of fractions. Additionally, we will be practising our counting, number bonds and times tables daily. Practising these skills at home will really help you to make excellent progress this year.
I am very excited about our first topic for this term – Oh we do like to be beside the seaside! This is a fascinating topic where we will be examining a variety of maps to identify beaches and coastlines before learning about some of the different features at the coast in Southend. We will then be exploring some of the different animals that we would find at the beach and in rock pools. We will also be sculpting our own sea life creatures and building a model rock pool.
Our PE lessons will take place on Thursdays and Fridays. PE kits (white t-shirt, red shorts and trainers) are to be kept in school and will be sent home half-termly to be washed. Please can you include a cold weather P.E. Kit (joggers and sweatshirt) as a number of PE lessons will take place outside.
With so many exciting things going on in school, there will be lots to talk about on those journeys home from school. Make sure you’re showing off all your learning and impressing your parents.
Behaviour and attitude to learning – the key to success!
In Class 8 we have very high expectations of exceptional behaviour and positive attitudes to our learning. All children are expected to stay on green by following the school rules, listening carefully and trying their best. However, they should be striving for gold by showing the Ghyllgrove Learning Powers. You should aim to be getting your green certificates to take home every Friday to show your parents how fabulous you have been at school.
All of the staff in Class 8 will work tireless to ensure everybody does their best this year. We will regularly hear the children read and set them numbers challenges too, so look out for updates in the home school diaries.
In order to help your child achieve and accelerate their progress, we ask for the following commitments from you at home:
Listen to your child read at home 3 times a week. Records of this can be made in your child’s Home School Diary. Please take the time to put in a small note and we will also do the same anytime we hear your child read during the school day.
Practise your numbers to 10 / 20 and your 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
Weekly Spellings will be sent home for the children to practise.
We are incredibly lucky to have access to some fantastic online resources too which will also support their learning too. Your child’s login details are included at the front of their Home School Diary.

Please remember, if you have ANY questions or worries during the year then come and see us. We will always help you if we know about anything that is worrying you. We want to keep everybody safe, happy and learning.
We look forward to seeing you soon,
Mrs Morrad and Mrs Killeen
