Class 8

Happy 2021 and Welcome to Class 8

Class Teachers:  Mrs Morrad & Mrs Killeen

Learning Support Assistants: Mrs Jackson, Miss Yo and Mrs Moth

After a very strange end to our first term in Year 2 we hope you, like ourselves, are very excited to return and learn together in our Remote Learning Sessions on Google Classrooms. Although this is not the start to the year we all would have liked, with your continued support we know we will all be successful.

Our  Google Classrooms Weekly Overview will continue to include important notices and information about our upcoming topics so please remember to check them regularly for any updates.

This term, we have lots of wonderful learning planned and some very exciting Google Meets organised for the time we are learning at home. Remember to join your classes Google Meet each day (Class 7 at 9:00, Class 8 at 10:00 and Class 9 at 11:00). Please note that sometimes Google Meets will be facilitated by different members of the Year 2 team.

During the Spring term in English, we will be reading a wide range of exciting and interesting stories, which we will use to help us with our writing. We will be learning how important it is to remember our basic writing skills, quality vocabulary and best handwriting. Also, we will be practising a range of reading skills during our guided reading sessions and across the curriculum we will continue to work on our spelling, phonics, punctuation and grammar too. Remember to read regularly at home. Plus don’t forget all children have a large selection of books they can access through Bug Club (ActiveLearn).

"The more you that you read the more things you know.

The more that you learn, the more places you will go."

-Dr Seuss

In Maths, we will be continuing to develop our core number skills which are vital in order to develop further understanding in all areas of Maths. We will be exploring numbers, learning about place value and tackling a range of problem solving and reasoning activities. We will then move on to developing our mental and written methods of calculation and our understanding of fractions. Additionally, we will be practising our counting, number bonds and times tables daily. Practising these skills at home will really help you to make excellent progress this year.

Our first topic for this term will be ‘Africa’. This is a fascinating topic where we will be improving our geographical skills and developing our understanding and curiosity of the planet we live on and the other animals we share it with.

PE lessons will take place weekly and lesson/activities will be posted weekly in Google Classroom so keep an eye out for our weekly PE sessions.

Behaviour and attitude to learning – the key to success!

In Year 2 we have very high expectations of exceptional behaviour and positive attitudes to our learning, both in class and during our Remote Learning sessions. All children are expected to stay on green by following the school rules, listening carefully and trying their best. However, they should be striving for gold by showing the Ghyllgrove Learning Powers.

At Home…

All of the staff in Year 2 will work tireless to ensure everybody does their best this year.

In order to help your child achieve and accelerate their progress during this term, we ask for the following commitments from you at home:

  • Encourage and support your child to complete their Remote Learning.
  • Ensure you access Google Classroom for our scheduled daily meet times. (Class 7 at 9:00, Class 8 at 10:00 and Class 9 at 11:00)
  • Upload completed classwork daily.
  • Listen to your child read at home 3 times a week or more. Records of this can be made in your child’s Home School Diary.
  • Practise your numbers to 10 / 20 and your 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

We are incredibly lucky to have access to some fantastic online resources too which will also support their learning too. Your child’s login details are included at the front of their Home School Diary.
