Welcome to Class 6's page.
In English this term we are looking at a variety of books and we will be learning new sounds in phonics, this term our focus is phase 2 and 3. Throughout this term we will be learning to use joining words using 'and'. We will be learning to leave spaces between words consistently and begin to punctuate sentences using capital letters and full stops. We will also be leaning to use a capital letter for names of people and the personal pronoun I. The children will learn the skill of being able to discuss what they have written with both adults and other pupils in their class. They will also be able to compose a sentence orally and say out loud what they are going to write about. As part of guided reading the children will explore a variety of poetry, traditional tales and non-fiction where they will develop their skills in fluency and comprehension. To help your child at home, please read with them at least 3 times a week and access their BugClub account too.
This term we will be consolidating our learning about Place Value within 10 and 20, including reading and writing numbers to 10 and 20. The children will develop their arithmetic skills in adding numbers to 20 as well as subtracting within 10 and 20. They will continue to expand their knowledge of number represented in concrete, pictorial and abstract ways. They will begin to recognise and name common 2-D shapes, as well as explore repeating patterns.
This term our topics will be ‘‘All Aboard’’ and “Whatever The Weather”. We will be developing our understanding of different modes of transport and how vehicles have changed in living memory. Children will be expanding their skills in observational drawing as well as using different art mediums. For our second topic, children will be exploring seasonal changes. They will examine the connection between weather and seasons. They will have the opportunity to create rubbings of different materials, natural and synthetic. Children will investigate different textiles, using a variety of materials which they will use to make a collage.
PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please make sure children have their PE kit in school at all times. Earrings must be removed otherwise children will not be able to participate in the lesson.
In class expectations
In Class 6 we have very high expectations of exceptional behaviour and attitudes to learning. All children are expected to stay on green by following the school rules, listening carefully and trying their best. However, they should be striving for gold by showing the Ghyllgrove Learning Powers. You should aim to be getting your green certificates to take home every Friday to show your parents how fabulous you have been at school.
In order to help your child achieve and accelerate their progress, we ask for the following commitments from you at home too:
Listen to your child read at home at least 3 times a week using our amazing online Bug Club resource or the colour banded books which are sent home weekly. Records of this must be made in your child’s Home School Diary. Please take the time to put a small note in it and we will also do the same anytime we hear your child read during the school day.
Practise counting, reading and writing your numbers to 20.
Practise the tricky word Planet sticker at the front of your home school diary.
School day timings
School begins at 8:45am and children must line up with their teacher in their zone on the playground.
School finishes at 3.05pm and the children are to be collected from the KS1 playground.
Any appointments needed with the class teacher will have to be made via the school office.
