Class 18

Class 18 - Year 5

Class Teachers: Mrs E. Brampton and Mr J. Pringle
Class Learning Assistant: Mrs T. Holburn and Miss L. Proctor

Welcome to Class 18.

We hope you are rested and relaxed after having a wonderful break with your families this Easter. We are looking forward to an exciting term ahead. To make sure that everything runs smoothly and that the children settle back into their learning easily, we have Class Teachers Mrs. Brampton (Wednesday-Friday) and Mr. Pringle (Monday - Tuesday), and Mrs. Holburn (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) and Miss. Proctor (Wednesday), we are always on hand with any support needed.

Over this summer term the topic will "From Summit to sea", a Geography based topic that allows the children to explore the physical geography of how mountains and rivers are formed, as well as the locations of the seven major summits across the globes.

Year 5 will also be reading the book Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, a book that both inspires their creative writing and their grammatical knowledge.

What to Bring to School

Please take the time to label ALL belongings, such as lunchboxes, water bottles etc. As we are a healthy school, we do ask the children have water only in the classrooms. At break time, the children can have a healthy snack of fruit or vegetables. All other equipment will be provided. Please leave pencil cases at home to enjoy when you get home. You will receive your home school diary which will come in with you every day as will your reading book.

PE

PE will be on  Monday and Thursdays Just a reminder that our PE kit consists of red shorts, white top and trainers. Black joggers and a black sweatshirt or hoodie are great for when it is colder, especially as PE is always outdoors. This must be adhered to and the children are expected to come into school wearing their PE kit on their PE days.

Home School Diaries

Your Home School Diary needs to be in school every day as it is used to record your spellings as well as your daily reading at home. In the front of the diary you will find the login details you need for some of our wonderful online resources, such as TTRS, Google Classrooms and Oxford Owl spellings.

This year, there will continue to be a strong emphasis on knowing the times tables by heart as this is especially important in Year 5.

As these things are so important, we ask that parents listen to the children read at least three times a week to encourage a love of books as well as supporting them with any times tables and spellings that they bring home. When you listen to your children read, this can be recorded in their Home School Diary and will count towards reading certificates which are awarded in order to celebrate their progress.

We look forward to continuing a really good partnership between home and school. To further this, there are lots of certificates to be earned for reading at home and an achievement scheme for learning times table facts. Look forward to your children bringing home lots of certificates!

Curriculum

In English, your children will be reading ' Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone " by J K Rowling which is a children’s classic. In maths, we will focus on greater maths fluency and increasing confidence in written methods of calculation such as multiplying 2 digit numbers by other 2 digit numbers. . During the afternoons, our science/topics will be 'Summit to Sea "and  "Settelers and Invaders".

Look out for more information on the curriculum that we will be studying over the course of the year in order to support your child as much as possible. Also, look out for any letters sent home or messages in the Home School Diary as well as log in details for TTRS.
