Class 18
Class 18 - Year 5
Class Teachers: Mr Pringle and Miss Robinson
Class Learning Assistant: Mrs Emmons
Welcome to Class 18.
Welcome back to school and welcome to Year 5! We hope you had a wonderful Summer and are looking forward to the new school year. To make sure that everything runs smoothly and that the children settle back into their learning easily, here is the information you will need.
The Autumn Term kicks off with the topic ‘Groovy Greeks’, where we will be looking at the civilisation of Ancient Greece and comparing life, technologies and beliefs to those in the present day. This is a history-based topic that allows the children to develop an understanding of how the world has changed over time, how civilisations work and how other countries of the world are different to ours.
Year 5 will also be reading the book 'Who Let The Gods Out'. The story follows a young boy, Elliot, and a young goddess, Virgo, as they embark on a fantastic adventure when the evil Thanatos is unleashed. This book will serve as an engaging stimulus for the English we will be doing in class this term.
Maths will see Year 5 looking at core number skills by exploring place value, numbers to 1,000,000 and formal written methods. We will be using the skills learnt in a variety of different ways by applying learning to different contexts such word problems and pictorial challenges.
Please take a look at the ‘Autumn Overview’ below for more information on the fantastic learning we will be doing in Year 5 throughout the Autumn Term.
What to Bring to School
Please take the time to label ALL belongings, such as lunchboxes, water bottles, jumpers etc. As we are a healthy school, we do ask the children have water only in the classrooms. At break time, the children can have a healthy snack of fruit or vegetables. WE ARE A NO NUTS SCHOOL. All other equipment will be provided. Please leave pencil cases at home to enjoy when you get home.
PE
PE will be on Monday and Wednesday. In Year 5, children come into school wearing their kit ready for the lesson. Just a reminder that our PE kit consists of red shorts, white top and trainers. Black joggers and a black sweatshirt or hoodie are great for when it is colder as PE is often outdoors.
As we head into Autumn and Winter, please remember to ensure that pupils have suitable kit for different weather conditions.
Home School Diaries
Your Home School Diary needs to be in school every day as it contains the login details you need for some of our wonderful online resources. It will be used to record your biweekly spellings as well as the reading you do at home 4x a week.
As reading is so important, we ask that parents listen to the children read at least four times a week to encourage a love of books, as well as supporting them with the spellings that they bring home. When you listen to your children read, this can be recorded in their Home School Diary and will count towards reading certificates which are awarded in order to celebrate their progress.
We look forward to continuing a really good partnership between home and school. To further this, there are lots of certificates to be earned for reading at home and any other achievements. Please check their bags and look forward to your children bringing home lots of certificates!
Homework
Your homework consists of:
-Regular reading - at least 4 times a week
-Regular times table practise – this can also be completed on TT Rockstars
-15 Biweekly spellings (or 10 weekly spellings for shorter units)
For biweekly spellings, the spellings will be given out on a Monday and the test will be on the Friday of the second week. For weekly spellings, spellings will be given out on Monday and tested on the Friday of the same week.
Please take a look at the ‘Homework Proforma’ below for more information.
We are looking forward to the new year ahead. If you have any questions, please feel free to discuss them with your class teacher.
