Class 4
Welcome to Class 4
Class Teacher: Mrs Mahadeo
Learning Support Assistants: Mrs Pearson and Miss Murphy
Hello and welcome to Class 4,
Welcome back! We hope you have had a wonderful summer holiday! We are looking forward to an exciting Autumn term in Year 1.
This term in maths, we will focus on place value within 10 and build upon our knowledge and skills from Reception. We will practice: sorting and counting objects; addition and subtraction; working with a number line; and comparing numbers.
Your child will have weekly spellings to learn. We ask that you practise them together at home. It is important to read as much as possible, and we ask that parents read to their children and listen to their children read to help them foster a passion for books. When you listen to your children read, this should be recorded in their Home School Diary and each read will count towards a reading prize!
In English, we will be continuing to follow our phonics scheme, Read Write Inc. The children will have the opportunity to develop and embed their phonic skills in our writing lessons. They will have opportunities to read stories and non-fiction texts, and practice different styles of writing. In our English lessons, we will learn how to use capital letters, full-stops and finger spaces correctly, and learn how to edit our work. We will continue to practice writing in full-sentences, slowly increasing our stamina for writing.
During the afternoons, our topic for the first half of the term will be 'Where we live'. We will be learning all about Basildon and how the town has changed over the years. In music, the children will learn to: clap the rhythm of their name in time to the pulse; sing a rhythm in time with the pulse; copy rhythms based on word patterns using an instrument; keep the pulse while playing a rhythm on an instrument; and follow instructions during a performance. The children will also visit our Forest School, which has some exciting new features this term!
Class 4 will have PE Wednesday and Friday afternoons. It is important that the children have their Ghyllgrove PE kits at school so that they can join in with the sessions. Our PE kit is a white t-shirt with red shorts and trainers. Children with long hair must have their hair tied back and no jewellery can be worn during P.E.
Look out for more information on the curriculum and what we will be studying over the course of the term in order to support your child as much as possible at home. Also, look out for any letters sent home and emails regarding events in school.
Finally, we would like to remind all families to label your child’s clothing and equipment. This includes PE Kit, school uniform, coats, lunch boxes and water bottles. All items must have your child’s name and class number. Lastly, may we remind you that we are a healthy and nut-free school; we ask that if children are bringing their own snack into school, it is healthy and does not contain nuts.
Please remember, if you have ANY concerns during the year then come and see us. We will always help you if we know anything is worrying you. We want to keep everybody at Ghyllgrove safe, happy and achieving. Please come and see us, email us at parents@ghyllgrove.essex.sch.uk or phone 01268 450067.
Thank you for your continued support.
